Fundamentals Courses

The new Theory & Aural I Drills (found under Courses in Auralia & Musition) are a series of carefully scaffolded assignments to build mastery in music fundamentals and musicianship.

Each of the 137 courses includes a pass threshold setting per entry, which means that advanced students can move quickly through the materials, whilst students that are struggling can do additional practice and have to prove their 'mastery' before they can move onto the next item in the course. This adaptive learning means that every student is working at their optimum level.

Many course entries also include time limits which challenge students to speed up their response times and improve fluency.

Here’s an example for helping students develop their note reading and writing skills:

Write 10 (named) pitches on the treble clef in 5 minutes, then 2.5 minutes, then 1 minute. By the end of the assignment, the student will have moved beyond “Every Good Boy Does Fine” to being able to quickly write pitches all over the treble clef.

The courses can be used in tandem with the Tests for Theory & Aural 1, or the practice syllabus, or on their own. And as always, instructors may copy any of the courses to customize the settings to suit the needs of their own students.
